One of the above has a highly developed nervous system......?
Things I do
- Reconstruction of neurons in 3-d (2-d if all else fails).Data is derived from visual cortical cells filled with horse-radish peroxidase or biocytin from in vivo and in vitro experiments. The results can look nice but believe it or not can have other uses as well.
Stuff we've done

A pair of smooth stellate neurons from cat visual cortex, area 17, layer 4: recorded from and injected with biocytin in vitro. They were shown to be in synaptic contact physiologically. Reconstructed in 3-D by light microscopy, using TRAKA, boutons from the "red" cell could be seen to contact a proximal dendrite from the "black" cell .Material from Stratford, et al. 1996.
Below are two views of a cell filled with HRP during an in vivo study and reconstructed in 3-D using TRAKA. The soma of the neuron was located in layer 6 of cat visual cortex, area 17. The apical dendrite and axon project up to the more superficial layers, mainly layer 4.
The first view is in the coronal plane, the second view is a rotation which shows the neuron as seen from the surface of the cortex looking down the apical dendrite.
Dendrites in red, axon in black.
