3D reconstructions
If it is necessary to measure or visualize 3D-structures such as
synapseareas or
volumes, I reconstruct parts of the neuropil. Therefore I take serial
images,
put them together to a stack, align them, then
I outline the
specific cellparts in each section. After that, these
contours are
going to be extracted and converted in to
a 3D-wireframe. At the end I
render the scene. For the reconstructions
I use the following software: reconstruct for creating the contour data
(see http://synapses.mcg.edu/tools/index.stm
) and blender for 3D-modelling
and visualisation ( www.blender.org
)
Whereas the reconstruct is well documented and programmed in a
userfriendly way, blender isn't that easy to use, but very powerfull.
According to 3D-Modeling, almost everything is possible to do with this
software. Therefore i provide here a small tutorial: from exporting an
object out of reconstruct until a final rendered 3D-model.
