This photo was taken in
Telluride, Colorado, during the Workshop
for Neuromorphic Engineering in 2002. The
two orange spots you see in front of the
beautiful Rocky Mountains are my external
supervisor Christof Koch (Caltech) and me. It was
about then that I was reminded that you
should only spend time on things that
you think are 100% worth it. Consequentely, I am now working on visual awareness with Christof Koch and
Daniel Kiper (INI).
The goal of my PhD studies is to contribute to our knowledge of the neural correlates of visual awareness.
To do so, I will study how various neural aftereffects behave while the inducing stimulus is temporarily perceptually invisible.
Currently we investigate how perceptual suppression induced by motion-induced blindness (Bonneh, 2001, or see our demos) affects the formation of negative afterimages.
These type of psychophysical experiements will allow to infer about the relative location of the neural site of perceptual suppression and the neural origin of the investigated aftereffects. In the future we hope to complement these experiments with imaging studies and electrophysiological recordings.
