The fly group at INI explores sensory-motor processing pathways in the fruit fly Drosophila. The research addresses visual and mechanosensory processing pathways relevant to flight control by applying novel approaches and measurement techniques. Visual guidance is explored under free-flight conditions using a wind tunnel equipped with virtual reality display techniques. This approach is complemented with experiments in tethered flying flies using MEMS force sensors and a high-speed vision system for kinematic analyses.
Similarly, the mechanosensory processsing pathways are explored using the two approaches. In both cases, transgenic flies will be used to explore the neural pathways underlying flight control.
